There's something pretty magical about hosting an event right on the San Francisco Bay.

The Golden Gate Bridge as your backdrop, sailboats drifting by, and that unmistakable California coastal charm that makes Sausalito such a special place.

If you're considering Travis Marina, home of the Presidio Yacht Club (PYC), for your wedding, milestone birthday, corporate celebration, or private party, you're in for a treat!

At Golden Gate Special Events, we've been producing events at Travis Marina since 2013. Over the years, we've helped countless clients transform this historic waterfront property into something uniquely their own.

And while the views are spectacular, there are a few insider secrets that can make all the difference when planning an event here.

Let's dive in!

A Little About Us

Before we dive into the details, we want to share a little about our experience with this incredible property and why we know it so well!

Golden Gate Special Events is an independently owned and operated event planning and production company. Our owner and Creative Director, Carrie Beal, has been producing events at Travis Marina since 2013.

Over the years, we've developed a wonderful working relationship with the venue and gained an incredible amount of firsthand experience navigating its unique spaces, logistics, and possibilities.

We know the ins and outs of planning events at Travis Marina exceptionally well!

From creating thoughtful floor plans and transforming the Boathouse to coordinating vendor deliveries, managing setup, and preparing for those famous waterfront winds, we've learned a thing or two along the way!

And here's something else we love: Travis Marina generally offers an open vendor policy.

That means you have the freedom to choose the professionals you want to work with, subject to the venue's requirements and approvals.

You are not required to hire Golden Gate Special Events as your event planning team to host your celebration at Travis Marina. You can choose your own planner, caterer, florist, photographer, and other event professionals.

While we've developed a wonderful working relationship with Travis Marina over the years, Golden Gate Special Events is an independently owned and operated company.

We believe choosing your event team should be a personal decision. After all, you'll be working closely with these people to bring your vision to life, and finding the right fit matters!

Of course, with our experience producing events at Travis Marina since 2013, we'd love the opportunity to share our knowledge, hear about your celebration, and see if we're a great match for each other.

But ultimately, it's your celebration, your vision, and your choice. And we believe that's exactly how it should be!

1. Understand the Different Event Spaces

One of the things we love most about Travis Marina is its versatility. Whether you're hosting an intimate gathering or a large celebration, there are several spaces that can work together to create an incredible guest experience.

The Boathouse: A Blank Canvas with Endless Possibilities

The Boathouse is one of our favorite spaces to transform!

With its nautical character, spacious interior, and industrial touches, it's perfect for everything from romantic wedding receptions to epic dance parties. Don’t even get us started with that rich aged seam foam turquoise color that absolutely everyone loves! So any different color combinations just pop in that space!

We've designed celebrations featuring overhead bistro lighting, flowing ceiling drapery, custom installations, and creative floor plans that completely change the atmosphere.

Our insider tip: Don't underestimate the importance of a thoughtful floor plan. Guest count, table sizes, catering stations, entertainment, and dance floor placement all impact how the space feels.

We love creating layouts that encourage guests to mingle and keep the energy flowing throughout the evening.

The Waterfront Deck: Let the Views Do the Talking

If there's one thing you absolutely must take advantage of at Travis Marina, it's the waterfront deck.

With panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands, this space is ideal for ceremonies, cocktail hours, and sunset celebrations.

Our favorite approach? Keep the design simple and let the natural beauty shine.

Think beautiful florals, relaxed lounge furniture, delicious cocktails, and music that sets the mood.

Our insider tip: Plan around the wind! The waterfront is gorgeous, but Sausalito weather can be unpredictable. We always recommend securing lightweight decor, carefully considering signage placement, and having a weather contingency plan.

The Upstairs Bar and Banquet Room

These spaces offer additional flexibility for your celebration.

The upstairs bar provides a relaxed yacht club “dive bar” atmosphere, while the banquet room can accommodate different event layouts, activities, and guest experiences.

For larger events, we often recommend thinking about how guests will transition between spaces rather than trying to host every activity in one room.

A well-designed event should feel like a natural progression from one experience to the next.

2. What's the Ideal Guest Count for Travis Marina?

One of the most common questions we get is, "How many guests can we comfortably fit at Travis Marina?"

While the venue will say they can accommodate up to 200 guests, our sweet spot is between 70 and 160 guests.

After producing events at Travis Marina since 2013, we've learned that there's a big difference between how many people a venue can accommodate and how many people it can comfortably accommodate.

And trust us, that difference matters!

Can you invite more than 160 guests? Absolutely! But here's where things can get a little tricky.

As your guest count approaches 170, the Boathouse starts to feel significantly tighter. Depending on your floor plan, table arrangements, and entertainment needs, you may find yourself sacrificing food service flow and comfortable guest circulation.

You might even need to seat some guests outside while the rest of your celebration takes place comfortably indoors.

And while outdoor seating can be lovely on a beautiful Sausalito day, it's not always ideal when the majority of your event is happening inside, especially once the sun goes down and that famous Bay Area chill rolls in!

Our insider tip: Before finalizing your guest list, think about the experience you want to create.

  • 80–120 guests: Wonderful flexibility for creative floor plans, and spacious dining.

  • 120–160 guests: Our favorite range for a lively celebration with a full dining experience.

  • 160–200 guests: Definitely possible, but requires more strategic planning and potentially some compromises with your layout or guest seating. Also you’ll incur moving + storage expenses which are completely necessary to maximize the full space.

Our recommendation? If you're dreaming of a comfortable indoor reception with a fantastic dance party, aim for 140 guests or fewer.

At Golden Gate Special Events, we create custom floor plans to help our clients visualize exactly how their celebration will feel before making those final guest-list decisions.

Because at the end of the day, just because you can fit 200 people doesn't necessarily mean you should!

We want your guests to enjoy the party, not feeling like sardines in a very beautiful waterfront can. Trust us, we’ve done that before and no one is ever happy!

3. One of the Best Perks: An 11:30 PM End Time!

Here's one of our favorite things about Travis Marina that you might not know: The venue's contracted end time is typically 11:30 PM!

And trust us, that's a BIG deal.

Many wedding and event venues throughout Marin County and the Bay Area have strict 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM cutoffs. Just when the dance floor is getting good, the music stops and everyone has to head home.

At Travis Marina, you often have the luxury of celebrating well into the evening, giving you more time for dancing, celebrating, and making memories with your favorite people.

But what if 11:30 PM isn't late enough?

Want to keep the party going? An after-party may be possible, too! Just ask the venue.

With advance planning, additional fees, and approval from venue management, there may be opportunities to extend your celebration beyond your contracted end time.

We've helped clients create incredible late-night experiences, transforming spaces into energetic after-party settings where guests can keep dancing and celebrating.

Our insider tip: If an epic dance party is high on your priority list, let us know early! We'll help you explore the possibilities, coordinate the logistics, and make sure your entertainment, staffing, and timeline align with the venue's approved hours.

Because sometimes the best part of the night happens after the formalities are over!

4. Love the Venue? Don't Wait to Secure Your Date!

Here's one of our biggest insider tips when booking Travis Marina: It's first come, first served. And they mean it!

You can absolutely call ahead to check availability for your preferred date, but here's the catch: You must sign your contract in person to secure your date.

No online contracts. No soft holds. No "I promise I'll come back tomorrow!" Unfortunately, none of those will save your date if someone else gets there first.

We've seen how quickly desirable dates can disappear, especially during peak wedding season.

Our insider tip: If you tour Travis Marina, fall in love with it, and your dream date is available, sign that contract on the spot!

Seriously. Don't go home to think about it for another week if you already know it's the one. Someone else could walk in that afternoon and book your date.

Think of it like snagging the last amazing pair of shoes in your size. If you love them, don't leave them sitting on the shelf!

Bottom line: At Travis Marina, your date isn't yours until the contract is signed. So come prepared to make it official!

5. No Deposit? Yep, You Heard That Right!

Here's another little quirk about booking Travis Marina that surprises many of our clients: They don't require an upfront deposit to secure your event date!

We know, we know. In the wedding and event world, that sounds almost too good to be true!

Most venues require a substantial deposit upfront, so when Travis Marina doesn't ask for one, you might wonder if you've missed a step.

Don't worry! That's simply how they do things here.

Instead of collecting a deposit, Travis Marina requires a signed contract and a credit card on file. While you won't be charged an upfront deposit, a cancellation fee applies if you cancel your event, according to the terms of your contract.

Our insider tip: No deposit doesn't mean no commitment! Be sure to review the cancellation policy carefully before signing.

And remember, your date isn't officially secured until you've signed your contract in person. No soft holds, no verbal promises, and no online reservations.

It's a little old-school, but that's part of how Travis Marina operates. Once you understand the process, it's pretty straightforward!

6. Take Advantage of the California Coastal Atmosphere

One of the reasons we love Travis Marina is that it doesn't feel like a traditional ballroom.

There's something wonderfully relaxed and authentic about the property.

You can create a beautiful, elevated event without making it feel overly formal.

Some of our favorite design directions include:

  • California Coastal: Natural textures, soft neutrals, greenery, and warm lighting.

  • Modern Nautical: Crisp whites, navy accents, subtle maritime details, and contemporary florals.

  • Romantic Waterfront: Flowing fabrics, candlelight, garden-inspired flowers, and elegant tablescapes.

  • Playful Celebration: Bold colors, creative installations, disco balls, and a fantastic dance floor.

The best events aren't necessarily the most expensive or elaborate.

They're the ones that reflect the people being celebrated. It’s the love that fills the room. We hear it every weekend, “This is the best wedding I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to a lot!” 😀

Our insider tip: Let the venue's natural beauty do some of the heavy lifting. With the right design choices, you can create an incredible atmosphere without overwhelming the space.

7. Is Travis Marina Right for Your Celebration?

We love Travis Marina, but we also believe the right venue depends on the experience you're hoping to create.

If you love rustic waterfront views, a relaxed California coastal atmosphere, the flexibility to choose your own vendors, and the possibility of celebrating later into the evening, Travis Marina has a lot to offer.

It's especially wonderful for couples who want their wedding to feel like an incredible party with their favorite people.

However, it's important to remember that Travis Marina isn't an all-inclusive venue.

You'll need to think about rentals, catering, staffing, setup, breakdown, and all the logistics that go into creating a seamless celebration.

And that's exactly what we'll cover in Part Two of our Travis Marina Insider Blog post.

Before You Book, Let's Talk About the Real Costs

Here's something that surprises many couples: While Travis Marina is one of the more affordable waterfront venues in the Bay Area, the venue rental is only one piece of your overall wedding budget.

In Part Two: The Real Cost of a Travis Marina Wedding: What Your Venue Rental Doesn't Cover, we're breaking down the expenses that often catch couples off guard, from rentals and staffing to setup, lighting, and everything in between.

Because knowing what to expect before you start planning can make all the difference!

And if you're considering Travis Marina and would like to meet our team, we'd love to connect.

At Golden Gate Special Events, we believe finding the right planning team should feel like a natural fit for everyone involved.

We'd love to hear about your vision, answer your questions, and see if we're a great match for each other. Please reach out on our website if you’re ready to talk. If you’re anything like our other Travis Marina Clients we’ll be good friends in no time!

Cheers!
